New General Catalog is pleased to present
Princes & Crows, Alix Soubiran’s
first solo exhibition in New York City. The artist transforms the gallery
into a small Wonderland, combining found objects with “a series
of portraits to awaken the winter spell.”
Her paintings are light-hearted and rendered in an academic style, reveling
in the youth and beauty of the subject. Most of the sitters are close
friends who exude a daydream quality and innocence that transport fluidly
into a time-suspended realm of enchanting tales - fairy, faux, and fabulous.
These are the sunlit colors of Alix Soubiran’s hometown Orlando,
Florida, whereby the paintings form visual extensions of a groupie love
and pop idolism in the musical traditions of Pulp, T-Rex, and the Kinks.
There are indeed a number of black birds (fake ones) in the show. The
recurring crows perhaps portend something dark or ominous that threatens
a constructed harmony. Historically crows have been associated with death
and evil, but others have claimed them for good omens. As that Counting
Crows song goes:
One crow for sorrow,
Two crows for joy,
Three crows for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five crows for silver,
Six crows for gold,
Seven crows for a secret never to be told.
